A new Dunross library curriculum will include information and media literacy as a part of what is meant by “literacy skills”. Initially, this will primarily mean helping our readers grow into discerning evaluators: “Becoming Wise Readers”. The approach will be open-ended, inquiry-based learning that blends readings, group discussions, personal reflections and a variety of Creativity practicum e.g. “classroom” drama, improvisational ‘games’ etc.
We will grow by becoming aware of the tension between theory and practice. The year’s plan will take into consideration:
What are the opportunities and constraints of the Dunross Library?
What works and why? Can we explore ways to build upon the existing foundation of past practice?
How may lessons learned in one environment, namely the library, positively impact another environment? (Such as the classroom, specific subject areas, extra curricular, family/ social life, etc.) ....and vice versa.
I aim to create a culture of a truly interactive learning environment that supports the development of lifelong learners, with goals and objectives that are flexible, collaborative and organically developing.
The primary library theme for this year, 2017 - 2018 is:
Watch Us Grow: “Becoming Wise Readers”
